Habits and Patterns: Good and Bad:

Habitual movement patterns can make OR break us.

Right from birth and through learning to crawl, to stand, to walk and run, dance and play, we are building our own unique movement patterns. We unconciously copy mannerisms and behaviours, postures and ways of moving from parents and influential people around us.

PATTERNS repeated over time become HABITS.

HABITS repeated over extended time periods become ENGRAINED. 

 These engrained habits form the unique moving structure that is YOU. 

As you mature there are layers of emotions that we experience. How we REACT or RESPOND helps form our breathing patterns, how we hold ourselves, our habitual posture and holding patterns.

Depending on the nature of our growing experience, these patterns can be positive and enlivening, especially if we are safe and loved. But they can also be the opposite, if our living environment is threatening, or if expectation and demands of us are higher than what we can manage, it’s highly possible that the default becomes holding-tight, holding-breath, hiding oneself, keeping quiet, minimising self-expression, and holding back from expressive joyful movement.

On a more physical level, those 12 hours days spent at work on the computer in your 20’s and 30’s can show up as chronic pain and restriction in your 50’s …..

This degenerative process CAN be unwound and movement and freedom restored, but wouldn’t it be awesome not to have to do the chronic pain and restriction bit in the first place?!

I’m often working with people in their 20’s and 30’s who are already experiencing this decline. Remember the longer that restrictive patterning is left to develop and deepen into your moving body structure, the more that these restrictive painful patterns become pervasive, affecting all aspects of life, work and activities.
